Jewelry Appraisal FAQs
What is a jewelry appraisal?
A jewelry appraisal is a written document produced by an accredited professional that outlines features of the piece of jewelry and provides a price valuation. During the appraisal, the jewelry quality is analyzed using approved standards and a detailed written evaluation of the piece including its estimated value is provided.
Is there more than one kind of jewelry appraisal?
Yes! A jewelry appraisal for insurance is based on replacing a current piece with a comparable new item of like kind and quality. In cases such as vintage items and period pieces, replacement value estimates may be for comparable items of similar kind and quality.
An appraisal may also be performed for many other intended uses including market values for settling estates, analysis of other markets, and jurisdictionally regulated opinions of fair market value.
What is the investment?
Jewelry appraisals start at $150 for a single item.*
Each additional item starts at $125.
Watch authentication and appraisals start at $200 for each watch.
Appraisals by appointment start at $175 for an item.
*The cost of appraising larger, more complex items is by estimate.
Hourly pricing is available for large estates, large groups of items, or activities such as a trial consult or expert witness testimony. Please call us to receive an estimate for your appraisal.
Do I need an appraisal?
We strongly recommend up to date appraisals on important jewelry pieces. Should you need to make an insurance claim, you’ll be glad to have an updated jewelry insurance appraisal. A thorough appraisal detailing the jewelry will be vital to replacing a lost, stolen or damaged item with something comparable.
What can be appraised?
R.F. Moeller’s appraisers have appraised a wide array of items. We most commonly offer:
- Engagement ring appraisals
- Jewelry appraisals
- Loose gemstone appraisals

How long will an appraisal take?
Our appraisals generally take 14 days to complete. More extensive collections or larger estates will take longer. When you bring your pieces in, our sales associates will provide you an expected date of completion.
Please let us know if you have a specific and important date for completion. We are happy to expedite your appraisal whenever it is possible to meet your need.
Do both R.F. Moeller locations handle appraisals?
Yes! We proudly offer appraisal services at both our Edina and Saint Paul locations.
Please note: appointments with our appraisers are available exclusively in our Saint Paul store.
Can R.F. Moeller appraise items that are not available to examine?
Occasionally, people need an appraisal for an item that is not available for our appraiser to personally examine. In cases of lost, stolen, damaged, or simply unavailable items, we can often provide relevant information and valuation opinions with contingencies and limitations of the situation in our formal appraisal document.
Looking to sell your jewelry or watch?
Appraisals are often a misnomer for offers to purchase. We purchase jewelry, watches, diamonds, gold coins, and much more.
